People Can Become Angels In The Afterlife

A common idea espoused when consoling a grieving person is that the deceased relation is probably an angel in heaven watching over them. While it's a comforting idea, the Bible creates clear distinctions between people and angels, and never suggests that humans transform into angelic beings following their demise. Certain verses in the Bible make it clear that we're not only beneath angels, but we're also an entirely different species. Psalm 8:4-5 states:

What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.

The idea that humans become angels in the afterlife likely stems from Matthew 22: 29-30. While discussing his views with the Sadducees, Jesus explains that people in heaven won't marry or perish, much like the angels. But Jesus says they will be like the angels, not that they will become angels. Many people, however, take the verse to mean that we will transform into heavenly beings, a misinterpretation of Jesus’s meaning.
